What you'll see during the tour
The guided Naples Underground tour takes you through five extraordinary spaces, 40 meters beneath the historic center.
1. The Greco-Roman Aqueduct
Walk through the narrow tunnels carved into the tuff stone over two thousand years ago. The aqueduct fed cisterns located beneath every building of the ancient city.
2. The Underground Cisterns
Vast spaces up to 8 meters high, used until the late 19th century to store drinking water. Some are still filled with crystal-clear water and dramatically lit.
3. The WWII Air-Raid Shelter
A moving space where original wartime objects are still preserved: beds, toys, photographs, kitchen utensils and graffiti left by the families who took refuge here.
4. The Hypogeum Garden
A cultivation experiment carried out by NASA and the University of Naples to study how plants grow without natural light, using only LED lamps. Unique in the world inside an archaeological site.
5. The Greco-Roman Theater
The hidden Roman theater of Neapolis, where Emperor Nero performed in 64 AD. The structure is preserved beneath the apartments of Vico Cinquesanti and is accessed through the cellar of a private home.
